The first SWAP kidney transplant in Andhra Pradesh performed successfully by the Nephrology team of CARE Hospitals

Patients Mr. M. M. Baig & Mr. Devidas get a new lease of life through the unique surgery

Hyderabad, November 27, 2012: The Nephrology team at Care Hospitals, Hyderabad achieved the unique feat of successfully performing the first ever kidney swap transplant in Andhra Pradesh on patients. Mr. M.M. Baig and Mr. Devidas, who were both suffering from end stage renal disease.

Mr. M. M. Baig, 50 years, with blood group B-Positive had a prospective donor in his wife Mrs. Ayesha Baig. However, her blood group is A Positive. Simultaneously, the other patient Mr. Devidas, 44 years, with blood group A Positive, had been undergoing dialysis. His wife Mrs. Nirmala was the prospective donor for him but her blood group is B-Positive.

Despite both the couples’ willingness for transplant, it could not be performed due to the blood group mismatch. Hence, the doctors planned to swap the donors wherein Ayesha wife of Mr. Baig (B+ ve) was planned as donor to Mr. Devidas (A+ ve) and Mrs. Nirmala (B+ ve), wife of Mr. Devidas was planned as donor to Mr. Baig (B+ ve). Post the completion of all legal formalities, this unique swap transplantation took place on 7th November 2012.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Rajsekhar Chakravarthy, Director-Division of Nephrology, Care Hospitals, Hyderabad said, “Swap Transplant also known as paired donor exchange takes place when two kidney recipients essentially "swap" kidneys from willing donors. The cases of Mr. Baig and Mr. Devidas best enunciate how swap transplants can help expand the donors’ pool in the country. We are happy that the patients and prospective donors agreed and today are well on their way to recovery and leading happy and healthy lives!”

In many cases while medically eligible to donate, each donor has an incompatible blood type or antigens to his or her intended recipient. During a swap transplant, by agreeing to exchange recipients—giving the kidney to an unknown, but compatible individual—the donors can provide two patients with healthy kidneys where previously no transplant would have been possible.

The surgery was led by a team of eminent doctors at Care Hospitals consisting of:
• Dr. Rajsekhar Chakravarthy, Director - Division of Nephrology
• Dr. Vikranth Reddy, HOD - Department of Nephrology
• Dr. K Rama Raju, HOD & Senior Consultant - Urologist & Transplant surgeon
• Dr. K Prasad Raju, Senior Consultant - Urologist
• Dr. B.V. Rama Raju, Senior Consultant – Urologist
• Dr.Revathi, Senior Consultant – Urologist

Dept of Nephrology CARE Hospitals have performed more than 200 Kidney Transplants. One of the finest centres with best outcomes, under the leadership of Dr Chakravarthy the division is growing as “Centre for Excellence” for all kidney diseases.
