President of Liberia visits the L V Prasad Eye Institute

Hyderabad, September 10th 2013: Her Excellency the President of Liberia Dr Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is visiting India to receive the Smt Indira Gandhi International Peace Prize 2012 for Peace, Disarmament and Development on September 12, 2013. After decades of fighting for freedom, justice and equality in Liberia, in 2011 President Sirleaf shared the prestigious Nobel Prize for Peace with two other women – fellow Liberian Leymah Gbowee, and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen. The President has taken time of from her busy schedule to visit the L V Prasad Eye Institute on September 10, 2013 in an effort to explore the possibilities of setting up an eye health initiative in her country with possible resource support from L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI). LVPEI with its vast experience and expertise in public health in India will of course take the support of other international non- government organizations and the government of Liberia to lead this initiative. Dr G N Rao, Chairman, LVPEI, speaking on the occasion said “LVPEI is ideally suited to lead such an initiative in Liberia, with 26 years in eye health having set up a network of comprehensive eye care with over 110 footprints all over the sate as well as in Orissa through establishing primary, secondary and tertiary eye care centers.” Dr Sirleaf, the President of Liberia welcomed the initiative and offered to initially work with the institute on a road map for an effective eye health initiative in her country.
