When comedian Prudhvi mocked NTR onscreen

Superstar Krishna's demise has witnessed a spate of articles and bulletins about his filmography. The media has also reminded today's audience about his controversial political movies that targeted NT Rama Rao and TDP. They were propaganda movies that Krishna made ostensibly to defame TDP and promote the Congress party indirectly.

Leaving politics aside, not many know that comedian Prudhvi was also part of this trend although he was apolitical! He played a politician in the 1989 film 'Gandipeta Rahasyam', which was directed by Prabhakar Reddy. The film had Vijaya Nirmala and VK Naresh in prominent roles. Naresh played a young activist who leads a revolt against the government.

Prudhvi's character was unmistakably written to resemble NT Rama Rao. Prudhvi, who was new to the film industry at that time, went to the audition to bag a character modelled after Ashok Gajapathi Raju. But when the director saw him, he felt he looked more like NTR.

The film was so full of anti-TDP rants and attacks on NTR that Prudhvi was too scared to even come out after its release. He probably lost out on acting offers for many years because he was part of the anti-NTR film.

Prudhvi, a couple of years after the movie's release, met with NTR to seek his blessings. NTR, who was not in power at that time, was generous enough to bless him. It's a moment Prudhvi cherishes to this day.
