In 2015, actor Dhanush produced the romantic comedy film 'Naanum Rowdy Dhaan' (Tamil) with Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara in lead roles. The film is back in the news this month due to the ongoing commercial dispute between Nayanthara and Dhanush (over a Netflix documentary).
In an open letter, last week, Nayanthara claimed that the film was a blockbuster. However, those in the Kollywood trade business claim that the movie actually fetched losses to its producer, Dhanush.
As per this theory, director Vignesh Shivan (who would later marry Nayanthara) had promised to complete the film within a budget of Rs 6 Cr. By the time the film was completed, Dhanush had to spend Rs 16 Cr. As a result, even though the film was a box office hit for distributors, the producer made losses.
It is said that the relations between Dhanush and the Nayanthara-Vignesh Shivan duo soured after this project was allegedly screwed up by the latter. Dhanush feels that the director's inefficiency led to cost overruns.
Except for those directly involved, nobody else would be able to talk about the finances of a film with certainty. Perhaps, it is true that Dhanush made losses. Perhaps, Nayanthara is right.
