How Krishna Vamsi's refusal to cast Venkatesh was a bold move

Krishna Vamsi had the opportunity to work with Victory Venkatesh on his very first movie. Gulabi, the romantic crime film written and directed by Krishna Vamsi, was supposed to be produced by D Suresh Babu. The film was released in 1995.

Suresh Babu offered Krishna Vamsi the golden chance to direct Venkatesh. The debutant director didn't mind telling him that he will cast only JD Chakravarthy and none else. Suresh Babu stepped aside and Ram Gopal Varma produced the movie on a budget of Rs 75 lakh.

Krishna Vamsi, when he was still working under RGV, was approached by Akkineni Nagarjuna before Suresh Babu did. Gulabi was developed for Nag initially on a big scale. Due to budget-related constraints, the script was reworked for a small hero. So, Krishna Vamsi almost had the opportunity to debut with a Nag movie. It was a big ask for any newcomer. This was possible only because he was RGV's protege.

Krishna Vamsi, in subsequent years, went on to work with Nag and other big names like Mahesh Babu.
