Here is why Gautham Menon is upset with Tamil heroes

Gautham Menon, after acclaimed hits in the 2000s, had an off-colour career in the 2010s. When many thought he would last as long as Shankar and Mani Ratnam have, he had a rude awakening in the past ten years. Delays and flops have taken the zing out of his career.

The director of films like Ye Maya Chesave is now looking at a downward spiral in Kollywood. Tamil cinema heroes are not interested to team up with him because they want to do only big-budget spectacles. Recently, the director commented that he prefers to do ten Rs 10 Cr movies instead of one Rs 100 Cr movie. However, this wish is not in alignment with what Kollywood's star heroes prefer. "Most Tamil stars want to work only in high-budget films and are not even bothered about the scripts," Gautham Menon said.

While Gautham Menon is entitled to his choices, heroes have their reasons for wanting to do only spectacle movies. They are competing with the pan-Indian movie-making trend. They are staring at diminished theatrical footfalls, which becomes worse in the case of small-scale movies. They want to team up with the flavours of the season, like Lokesh Kangaraj and Nelson Dhilipkumar.
