If you are into Telugu-language OTT originals, you must have heard of Anaganaga. The family drama film written and directed by Sunny Sanjay has been streaming on an OTT platform since May 15. The critically-acclaimed movie features Sumanth alongside Kajal Choudhary and Viharsh in lead roles.
Encouraged by the response by OTT viewers, the makers of the film have decided to opt for a post-OTT theatrical release. So, Anaganaga is breaking the mold by arriving on OTT first and theatres later. It was never meant to be a theatrical release.
In recent times, emotional dramas like Maa Nanna Superhero bombed at the box office. Their content was sloppy and they deserved the drubbing. But even well-written and well-performed films like 35 - Chinna Katha Kadu didn't enjoy much traction. Karthi's Sathyam Sundaram last year shot itself in the foot by clashing with Jr NTR's Devara; otherwise, it would have been a bit hit.
It is now time for Anaganaga to prove a point. If the movie becomes a box office hit, OTT platforms would be encouraged to allow the post-OTT theatrical releases of their acclaimed originals once in a while. If the film tanks, it will be a big setback for the newly-minted model.
