There is a rumour in the town (which is most likely a planted news story by the government) that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy wants the benefit shows of big-ticket movies to benefit society. According to this view, the original purpose of benefit shows was to use the proceeds (collections) towards benefiting a charity organization or a group of underprivileged people. With time, benefit shows in the context of the cinema industry were repurposed to enable the maximization of revenue for the producer, distributor, and/or exhibitors.
Charity has to be voluntary. It can't be forced by the government. The buzz is that the Telangana government wants Tollywood producers to contribute the proceeds from benefit shows for the education of the poor in the state.
The rumour may or may not be true. But we shouldn't be surprised if it is true. How the Telugu film industry navigates such an unreasonable demand has to be seen. if the producers disagree to such a proposal, the government will label superstars as selfish. There are always ways to dodge such arbitrary demands. If you stop calling something a benefit show, it ceases to be one.
