Coolie's advance bookings and pre-sales were so phenomenal that it was expected to gross not less than Rs 150 Cr on Day 1. And that's what it did.
On its opening day (read August 14), the action thriller grossed a whopping Rs 151 Cr at the worldwide box office. The Telugu version is believed to have contributed about Rs 38 Cr to the breathtaking tally.
This is the highest a Kollywood movie has ever amassed on a single day. The biggest opening, many believe, will remain unbeaten for the foreseeable future.
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is headlined by Rajinikanth. Soubin Shahir and Akkineni Nagarjuna have played negative roles. Aamir Khan and Upendra did cameos. Among the film's critically acclaimed features are its top-notch technical qualities, epitomized by Anirudh Ravichander's background music and Girish Gangadharan's cinematography.
