Here is how much Indian movies spend on Oscar campaigns

Recently, Tamil director Vetrimaaran revealed that actor-producer Dhanush spent Rs 3.5 Cr on the Oscar campaign for their 2016 movie Visaranai. Since the movie had a progressive message, Dhanush hoped that it would stand a chance to bag the Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language film category.

A 2002 report from Rediff.com estimated that Aamir Khan's expenses to secure an Oscar nomination for Lagaan were at least $200,000.

A Forbes India article from 2025 states that the budget for the Oscar campaign for Chhello Show (another Indian film) should have been at least $1.7 million (around Rs 16 crore). The article also mentions that the amount spent on Newton's campaign was over Rs 1 crore.

According to SS Karthikeya, the line producer for RRR and son of director SS Rajamouli, the RRR team spent approximately Rs 8.5 crore (about $1.03 million) on the Oscar campaign for Naatu Naatu. The initial budget was around Rs 5 Cr.
