Pa Ranjith is one of the most sought after directors in town today. Thanks to superstar Rajinikanth. Pa Ranjith’s film Kabali is all set to release on July 1st, the director talks about his film, superstar Rajini and more....
How did Kabali happen? It must be a honour?
Soundarya Rajinikanth is a friend of mine. She called me and said that her dad Rajini sir wants to meet me. She told me that her father has seen my film Madras twice. I was in awe. He liked the film. This is how Kabali took shape. He liked my film Madras and gave me an opportunity to direct him.
Why you?
Superstar thinks differently. He wants some freshness in the film. He likes to work with directors of our generation. Maybe that is why he chose me.
Kabali is an unusual title....
The term Kabali is a local one and is associated with goondaish behaviour. In this film Kabali will be shown in a positive manner. When you see the film you will see the justification. You will see how this character fights for the Indian labourers in Malaysia and becomes a don who fight for them.
Tell us about Rajini’s look in the film?
He will look like a old man for about 20 minutes in the film. Rest of the film you will see him in a young avataar. It was the demand of the script.
So action is the main ingredient in this film?
Not really. There are other emotions riding high in this film. Rajini sir’s performance is outstanding. He was awesome in Mullum Malarum and in Kabali its much for than that.
Future films?
A film with Suriya was planned before this film. My next film will be with him.
Pa. ! Can you explain this initial?
It’s my father’s name. Panduranga...hence Pa.
