Tamil cinema has lost its mojo and anybody who thinks otherwise must not be a serious movie buff. Nine out of ten movies (movies that count) that come out of Kollywood feel laidback, dull and insulting to new-age aesthetics/themes. Revolver Rita, the latest offering from Tamil cinema, validates our opinionated take for the umpteenth time.
Keerthy Suresh plays Rita, the daughter of a single mother (Radhika Sarathkumar) and sister to a woman whose abusive, alcoholic husband is a source of comical (!) frustration. The mother accidentally kills a notorious rowdy in their house, and the family must now move heaven and earth to hide his dead body.
The dark comedy is lifeless despite almost all characters lacking grey cells. Keerthy Suresh looks lost and not the least bit nervous even in the most dangerous situations. The baddies, including Sunil and Ajay Ghosh, are minimalist in a dreary way (they were supposed to do it in a delightful way).
Our theory is that any of the top memers/reel-makers from the Telugu land would have written better jokes. The comedy is that bad. Almost all moments that were intended to be LOL-esque come and go without a whimper. And, sadder still, after a point, even this vain effort is absent.
Revolver Rita's biggest minus still remains a demotivated Keerthy Suresh. It's doubtful she was told the movie is a dark comedy. Extremely doubtful.
